Is Free Exposure Worth The Money?
I know that sounds funny, you would think “of course anything free is worth the money!” But I’m here to tell you that your time is worth a lot of money and you don’t want to waste your time any more than you would want to waste money. Be sure to get what you are “paying for.” But when you are first starting out you generally have more time than money, I hope to show you how to spend it wisely.
I’ve been working online as a full time Internet Entrepreneur for over 5 years, although I’ve been messing around with computers since I was in high school. When I first got my business started I fell into the trap of using “get rich quick” promoter and products, thinking this was the fast and easy way to get my business started. I literally wasted hundreds of dollars on marketing with these “pros” and did not get much in return.
I have tried some of the more conventional methods like pay-per-click and banner ad space and never really got the results I was hoping for but I kept working at it. I’ve researched a lot of methods and spent even more money on other products just to see if they would work. I got a little smarter as I went on but mostly my hopes just got lower and I was getting more frustrated that this was much harder than I first realized.
However, I never gave up. Now, 5 years later, I can share with you a few of the methods that have without fail worked to give my websites more exposure. You can follow my path and try some of those expensive products from “marketing gurus” or you can skip the pain and suffering and move to where I am now. I hope I can expose the biggest fallacy about marketing and give you the effective information you need to build your online business.
The biggest delusion about internet marketing is that you have to shell out big bucks to “buy traffic” and get a steady stream of customers to your site to buy your products. This just isn’t true. Don’t get me wrong, pay-per-click and ad space have their merits but they can get very expensive and when you are just starting out you are striving just to break even and can’t afford a large marketing budget. While there are a lot of methods I am only going to focus on the most effective method that has
consistently worked for me so you can get back to work and back to earning money faster and easier.
Create Your Own Ezine – Begin today by signing up with an autoresponding company like www.aweber.com where you can create an opt-in subscribers list. The monthly fee is easy to manage and a pro like Aweber can handle hundreds of different lists and thousands of subscribers. The opt-in list is my far one of the best investments you can make in your business.
Once you have opened your autoresponder account and have researched how to use their service and all the tools they provide it is time to get writing. You know your products better than anyone but if you are not a great writer or just don’t think you put out 2 or three articles about your products then use a freelancer. For very little money you can post a project on a site like www.elance.com and get a copywriter to research and write about your subject and products. You can generally get 3 or 4 articles for less than $100.
Whether you write the articles yourself your you hire them out make sure they properly reflect what you are marketing and uses persuasive sales language to entice interest in your site and products.
Load this first Ezine into your autoresponder follow-up messages. This will be the first edition of your Ezine that people get when they sign up for your opt-in list. Remember, these people are opting-in to your mailing list because they are interested in your products, be sure to give them more than they expect in your Ezine.
Time to start marketing your Ezine. This requires massive action and a lot of patience. Begin by creating a template ad for your ezine that includes information about your site and products. Be brief, about a paragraph long and again use persuasive sales language. Don’t stretch the truth too much, we don’t want the customers disappointed when they finally reach your site. You will need to submit this ad to ezine directories and announcement lists. Go to Google and type in “ezine directories” and you will get a great list to get you started. As you post you will see links to new directories, post as many ads as you can in a one week period, at least no less than 50. Submit your subscription information (your autoresponder form from Aweber) along with your ad and other information the site asks for. This will increase your exposure by putting your ad on all the top ezine directories and on Google.
Now, go to Yahoo.com and sign up for an account. Search for the ezine announcement lists and promotion groups. There are more than 100 of these groups and some of them have very significant numbers of subscribers. Sign up for each group by sending a blank email to the group email list or group admin. You will receive an email back asking you to subscribe. Once you subscribe you are in the group. Post your ad along with the address of your Ezine and your site if they allow it. Again do this to as many groups as you can for a 1 week period. This method could earn you as many as 50-500 subscribers each week.
Believe it or not you have gone further than many internet business owners. You can sit back and watch your subscriber list grow and your website hits. But don’t sit back for too long, you need to get started on your next Ezine edition, at least one ever week or every other week, and set yourself a goal for posting to groups and directories every week. This kind of consistent effort will pay off more than any “just send your money and we do all the work” guru product you could buy.
